Aegean Airlines flies European business with genuinely good catering and lounges for a carrier its size, and its network is the funnel to the islands. Direct long-haul business into Athens has grown — Gulf carriers year-round, US routes seasonally — and Turkish via Istanbul is, as across this region, the constant price reference.

On the island legs themselves the aircraft are small and business is often front-row seating with priority handling — the flat bed exists only on the long-haul leg in.

Athens International (ATH) is the single airport, forty minutes from the centre by metro. It is comfortable but compact; summer Saturday mornings are its one genuinely chaotic window.

For island connections, one through-ticket protects you; Athens is a poor place for self-transfer gambles in August.
